CAN: Community Action Network

LINC: Leadership, Inclusion, Networks, Community

Community Action Network - Leadership, Inclusion, Networks and the Community Project (CAN-LINC) CAN-LINC has been a cornerstone of New Farm Neighbourhood Centre activities for a number of years.  Events such as Politics in the Pub, Do U Share Knowledge? (DUSK, formerly Twilight Training) and the CAN Awards were all initiated by CAN and continue to be vital programs at NFNC.  CAN aims to build social capital and community capacity, encourages and supports community leadership, and promotes networking, access to information and community spirit. CAN is a fluid, action-oriented working group who meet regularly at the Centre and is a great opportunity for you to participate in cooperative projects and programs. Bring your own special focus to CAN, or work on the 2007 program with like-minded members of your community.

The Community Action Network began in 1997 to respond to the social impacts of urban renewal in the inner north eastern suburbs of Brisbane. CAN'S mission is to work to keep inner north Brisbane a place for all.  In 2002, CAN was included in consultations regarding the development of the Inner City Place Project where government, the community and businesses would work more closely together to respond to local issues such as alcohol management and homelessness. CAN with the Neighbourhood Centre was funded to implement a social capital strategy as part of the Inner City Place Project.

The working group overseeing this strategy became CAN-LINC in recognition of CAN's role in developing innovative social capital strategies such as Politics in the Pub, Twilight Training and the CAN Awards.

The Working Group takes action towards building social capital, community capacity and leadership.   The Working Group also works towards community participation in the process of Urban Renewal and to prevent the loss of social diversity, universal access and low cost housing.  CAN-LINC has a strong commitment to building connection in the area particularly supporting the networks that already exist and by creating opportunities to bring people together to celebrate, discuss and achieve a tolerant and diverse community.

CAN Awards 2005

Brisbane Powerhouse’s Spark Bar was overflowing with people to celebrate our community leaders at the seventh CAN Awards ceremony in November, 2005. The afternoon started with a celebratory BBQ at the Centre, where drummer Elliott got everyone grooving with drums and clap sticks for the walk over to the Powerhouse.

Guests were welcomed at the Powerhouse by GuitarZEN and Maida Lilley from the CAN-LINC Working Group and Management Committee. Local federal member Arch Bevis MC'ed the nights events, helping to give out 22 awards over 9 categories. Assisting him were Carol Cashman representing the Lord Mayor, Cr David Hinchliffe and Cr Tim Nicholls. The night was capped off with live music from “The Envelope” and finger food.

The process of deciding on recipients was undertaken this year by a sub-committee chaired by Arch Bevis. A large number of nominations were received, a clear indication of a great amount of amazing work being done in the local community.
