Moving to New Farm...

Well, off and on, I have been involved with New Farm for more than twenty two years, after that I moved back to Carseldine and eventually I found New Farm more interesting, so I shipped back again. So, it is twenty years now. I like it very much because I’ve got lots of things to do up here. You can go to the library or if you like the social life, you can go to the Neighbourhood Centre or the Powerhouse, or the Riverside Walk or the free market on the weekend. New Farm Park is very interesting. At weekends I do Tai Chi with a group.

Changing New Farm…

It’s changed a lot from the New Farm of a couple of years ago, especially the housing and property prices, it’s gone up like mad, it’s triple the amount now. Even a couple of years ago people could buy a two bedroom unit priced at $100,000 or just over a $100,000 but now it’s $700,000 or $800,000 – it’s very bad for the poor people who live here. Lots of people lived in what is called a boarding house, but the price of property is going up so a lot of people who live in the boarding house are finding that the rent is going up very high. This is not like a natural disaster – Government policy can change that, so I’m not worried, the Government can eventually change that.

More young people are coming to live in this area, especially nowadays it is very easy to get a job now so young families like to stay in New Farm property. In my own apartment block there are now a couple of younger families. It is a mixture of good and bad; safety is improving but the price of property is not good for the homeless - you can’t just have it perfect in everything – not one hundred per cent perfectly good for everyone. It’s good for some but bad for others.

Getting around New Farm...

New Farm is very convenient for transport. My son goes to university in the city and public transport is very convenient. He can take a bus or a City Cat to Queensland University. Sometimes I go to a course in university, to take a spiritual course or whatever, and it’s easy to catch a bus in, it’s very convenient. Mostly I feel very happy, very relaxed here, have a cup of coffee in the Neighbourhood Centre or go to the library to an exhibition or something like that.

Food...

I am a Vegetarian – I have been Vegetarian for fifteen or twenty years now. Occasionally I have fish or perhaps a little chicken, but mostly Vegetarian. Yes, yes, because I believe the Buddha philosophy which is respect for life – every life. If you have respect for them, you don’t kill them.
