Politics in the Pub: Welcome to the Circus

Australia is fast becoming known as the coup capital of the world, with yet another party spill freshly inked into the history books. How do we account for the fact that no Prime Minister has seen out a full term for over a decade? What impact has the changing media landscape had on the political sphere, as politicians seek to engage with a public in the era of “fake news”, social media and the 24-hour news cycle? The Australian public is increasingly frustrated with the revolving-door leadership and public spats of the major parties, and yet a reprieve seems unlikely.

So where to from here?

The final Politics in the Pub for 2018 will take place at the Brisbane Powerhouse on October 30th with a conversation about politics and media in the era of disposable leaders. This event will include a panel discussion from experts, followed by an open Q&A session with the audience. Join us to discuss the current state of affairs and how we got here, and examine what lies ahead. Does our political system need a constitutional overhaul? How does strong political journalism survive amongst twitter headlines, “fake news” and soundbite policies? How does debate prosper in a world of outrage culture and digital echo chambers?

Let’s tackle these and other big questions on the night!

Hosted by ABC Brisbane Radio’s Rebecca Levingston. Panellists include Neil Glentworth, Christine Jackman, Wyatt Roy and Professor Patrick Weller.

Politics in the Pub is a FREE, Q&A style debate which tackles the most pressing contemporary issues for both Australia and the world.

Admission is free, but we would appreciate you registering your interest in attending via the Eventbrite link.
