High
Rise, High LIfe? - Report
Our
Politics in the Pub on urban development - ‘High Rise -
High Life” - went off like a rocket at the Powerhouse last
Thursday (6 May 2010). At 70 plus the attendance was great
and the speakers were terrific, both knowledgeable and
challenging. We had David Hinchcliffe our local member,
local resident and stalwart supporter of diversity and
inclusion, Professor Peter Spearitt the well known raconteur
and intellectual from University of Queensland, Michael
Kerry the former grande fromage of Queensland
planning, Larissa Waters the Green candidate and New Farm
resident, and finally, another local resident and
Brisbane’s former First Lady, Mary Phillip, who entertained
us with stories about New Farm colour and diversity. While
all of the speakers agreed that we need to be careful to
ensure we maintain diverse and vibrant inner-city culture
there were some, like Professor Spearritt, who urged more
caution and argued we should not be too quick to assume that
high rise developers have community interests at heart.
Question time focused on the issue of population growth and
concerns about the fragility of our infrastructure, and we
had a lively debate about whether inner Brisbane can really
handle the growth our projections expect.
Our next
Politics in the Pub is ‘All that Twitters is not Gold’ on
22 July 2010 - It’s about social networking and whether it
enhances or diminishes interpersonal communication. Come
along and share your views!
